Mangrove: Noun. A shrub or tree that grows mainly in coastal saline or brackish water. In our opinion, an underappreciated coastal superhero.
Be honest. When you close your eyes and think of coastal Florida, what do you see? Endless sandy beaches? Palm trees? Maybe some luxury condos??
That’s what we thought. For many, this is the definition of paradise. Just ask Florida’s millions of yearly visitors, snowbirds, and residents.
Unfortunately, however, the environment is changing. Our beautiful coral reefs are collapsing, and vibrant seagrass beds are in decline. Tropical storms are becoming more powerful. Sea levels are inching up. Beaches are eroding.
Good thing we have mangroves.
“Mangrove Bay” explores the vibrant and criminally underappreciated world of the coastal mangrove forest. These ecosystems support a countless array of life both above and below the water. Mangroves are, infact, essential nursery grounds for recreational fisheries like snapper and snook, and even large reef dwellers like Goliath grouper and lemon sharks.
For us human residents, mangroves provide important ecosystem services by stabilizing our coastlines, absorbing wind and wave energy from tropical storms, and storing as much as 4 times the amount of carbon as terrestrial forests.
